The Airline Cathay Pacific

Hi, do you like planes? I do. In this information report I have put together a variety of information about an airline… Cathay Pacific. It has been around for 76 years (as of 2022). Last year they celebrated 75 years which you can read about here. It is the flag carrier of Hong Kong and one of the largest airlines in the world. Throughout this report I have out a wide range of different photos, that let you see as well as read about Cathay Pacific. Even better this report has been checked by a Cathay expert, so you can be assured that the information has been fact checked. In this report, since Cathay Pacific is quite long I will say CX instead. **Note: This edition has been updated for 2022!**

Which planes are in their fleet?

CX operates five different passenger aircraft. For Airbus, they have A321neo, A350-900, A350-1000 and A330-300. For Boeing, they operate the 777-300. CX also previously had the Airbus A340 but they don’t have it any more.

CX also has a cargo airline “Cathay Pacific Cargo”. The aircraft they have for cargo are the Boeing 747-8F and the 747-400ERF . The cargo plane is a double-decker plane. Use the interactive slideshow below to view all of CX’s fleet.

Where do they fly and do they have entertainment services on-board?

CX’s main hub is Hong Kong, which they are the flag carrier of. Hong Kong airport is massive! CX does have entertainment TV’s on all of their airplanes. The TV’s have a mixture of movies, TV shows, music and games. On their A350s they have satellite TV and on the A321neos their TVs are 4K Ultra HD! The entertainment is always changing, so if you travel frequently you won’t be stuck with the same entertainment each time. The TV’s have a remote which is usually next to you on your seat. Some of the games support multiplayer, so that you can play with a friend who is on the same flight.

How does the food service work?

At the start of the flight the cabin crew will give you a menu with the flight’s meals on it. They have dinner, breakfast and lunch and bring around snacks frequently during the flight. (This may vary depending on your route.) The airplanes do have a galley where you can collect snacks for yourself at any time during the flight. Most of the food includes what you ordered and a bread roll with butter, usually it will have some other smaller things like ice-cream and some fruit salad. If you are vegetarian or vegan they will make sure you get food that is vegan or vegetarian.

Who do they own?

Cathay Dragon Update: Unfortunately, due to the pandemic CX has decided to cease operating Cathay Dragon and all Cathay Dragon flights until further notice. Previous flights on Cathay Dragon have now been moved over to CX, however Cathay Dragon planes are no longer operating and the new CX routes are using CX services. The following information is for before the pandemic.

CX owns Cathay Dragon, Cathay Dragon has the same tail symbol as CX does, except it’s red. (Cathay Dragon was used to be called Dragonair but its name has changed).

Does anyone own CX?

Yes, Swire owns CX. Swire is a company based in Hong Kong and London. Their website is found here.

What is ONEWORLD?

Good question. You may have seen some photos of oneworld’s logo, but you don’t know what it actually is. Oneworld is an airline alliance (like Star Alliance and Sky Team) that has multiple airlines. Many airlines are part of the oneworld alliance and CX is one of them, so **was** Cathay Dragon. This means that you can get benefits on CX flights if you are Oneworld member!

What different types of seats do they have?

They have economy, premium economy, business class and first class. Remember that the classes may look different on different aircraft!

Economy is generally considered the worst class because it has small seats, and they are not comfortable. However, these are the cheapest seats you can purchase. You can put the seat back a tiny amount and you have a leg rest that comes out at the front.

Economy seats

Premium economy has bigger seats than economy and is a bit more relaxing than economy. It has more leg room and has a leg rest and seat recliner. There are more comfortable than economy and also include a wellness pack (toothbrush, sleep mask etc…)

Premium Economy Seats

Next is business class which is awesome, it has really big seats and you can have a proper sleep. It’s got great food because the food is better than the economy and premium economy food! It’s also got better TV’s and better remote. It is also pretty relaxing.

Business class seats

Finally the best is first class it has better seats, toilets and food. So you can have a proper flight and a nice relaxing time. It basically has better everything! The TV’s service in flight is amazing, with a large TV and a touch screen controller right next to you! The meals are better then the rest of the classes, a delicious Asian experience. You can even try an in-flight massage.

Does CX have a membership club?

CX’s membership club is called the macro polo club. It is also **was** Cathay Dragon’s membership. The first card is green then silver, gold and finally diamond. You earn points by traveling with the full price (not paying with your points). Your points can give you an upgrade on a flight which means you could go up a class to business class or first class. You can use your points to pay to go in a lounge and pay for flights. With both of those options you can use money and points. On these airlines you can earn and spend your points.

They are also part of Asia Miles where you can earn and spend points. Asia Miles is a loyalty and frequent-flyer program which was made by CX. When signed up it allows you to earn miles(points) by making different purchases with other brands credit cards or on partnered flights, hotels, dining, financial services, retail and some technology products. It also has other services as well.

Does CX have merchandise?

Looking for a memory of your CX flight, or just want a new water bottle. Maybe you just want a model airplane on your home. Well, lucky for you CX does have some merchandise! A lot of the time it is something that is made out of something recycled. For example recycled airplanes, which are not used any more, or recycled uniforms which are too old for the cabin crew to use. To see some of their merchandise you can click here for the official CX merchandise website. The website is on the Asia Miles website where you can use miles that you earn as well as pay with a credit card like normal. The merchandise is good quality and you can trust that is good.

Can you stay connected in the air?

Yes! When traveling on CX they offer WiFi and internet services. This is available on most aircraft. On the A350, you get access to live TV as well! Note that, the wifi service is not free.

What is the Headland hotel?

CX has its own hotel called the Headland hotel only the staff of CX and their families are allowed. The hotel has a place called Cathay city where there are shops and other services. Outside the hotel you can find the first ever CX. Inside you can find a cockpit of the last CX Boeing 747. You can use the interactive slideshow below to some photos of the cockpit that is inside the hotel. The first CX was called Betsy. In fact now when you go on CX you can buy some beer that is made buy CX and is to remember Betsy, Betsy beer.

Are there any airline lounges?

Yes, CX does have lounges all around the world. In Hong Kong Int Airport they have a total of six lounges. Two of these are for first class passengers, these are called The Wing and The Pier. Two of the business lounges also have another space in the same lounges. The other business lounges are The Deck and the Bridge.

Is there anything else to know about CX?

  • On all flights every announcement will be in English and Mandarin including the safety procedures on the TV’s. At the end of a flight if you are arriving at a destination that is not a place where the main language is English or Mandarin they will most likely do the final announcements in that country’s language as well as English and Mandarin.
  • CX is not a budget airline, the food price is already added to your ticket.
  • CX was started by 1 American and 1 Australian that lived in Hong Kong. (Read more about their history here)
  • In Australia all CX planes do not have first class.
  • You can not travel staff travel with Marco Polo at the same time.
  • CX’s logo recently changed.
